WHAT IS A CASUAL ACADEMIC

Appointments
Casual academics are employed on an hourly basis. Contracts of appointment may be issued for a minimum of one hour and up to a maximum of one year. The hourly salary rate you are paid includes payment for the presentation of the lecture/tutorial, as well as all associated duties including preparation, up to 20 minutes of marking for each hour of teaching, administration of student records and informal student consultation. The rate also includes a loading to compensate for the casual nature of the work, and in lieu of leave entitlements.

Contracts
Following an offer of employment as a casual academic you will be asked to sign a contract of employment. The contract will specify the duties, the amount of time expected for each and the appropriate rates of pay. You should keep a copy of this contract.

Getting Paid
When the contract has been filled in and signed it will be passed to Payroll Branch for processing. Your salary will be paid fortnightly into your nominated account at a financial institution. As a casual academic you will be subject to PAYE tax provisions. Further information on PAYE tax can be found at the ATO site at www.ato.gov.au

Superannuation
All casual academics are eligible for non-contributory superannuation through the Award Plus Plan. UTS will contribute to the scheme on your behalf however the onus is on you to claim superannuation payments on retirement. Award Plus is administered by UniSuper

As a casual academic you are paid a loading in lieu of leave entitlements such as sick or annual leave

AT WORK

Health & Safety
As a casual academic you are covered by the University's workers' compensation insurance scheme. You have a legal responsibility for ensuring the safety of students and visitors in your classes, and for providing relevant and practical EHS information to students. You should take steps to ensure students adopt safe work practices. All accidents or incidents at UTS whether requiring medical treatment or not should be reported on an Accident/Incident Report to the Environment, Health and Safety Branch. Staff Identification
Your Faculty or the Human Resources Unit can provide Staff Identification Letters.  Your letter may be used to establish that you are a staff member for the purpose of library access, equipment hire and the use of union facilities. HRU is located on level 6, Building 10, Jones Street, City Campus and can be contacted on 95141060.

TEACHING AT UTS

Help for New Teachers
The Institute for Interactive Media and Learning (IML) provides support and development for all academic staff.  IML can run development programs specifically for casual academics by negotiation with the faculty. You can find IML at http://www.iml.uts.edu.au  or phone 9514 1669,  fax 9514 1666.

Helping Students
The Student Services Unit  http://www.uts.edu.au/div/ssu/  is available to assist students with problems that may arise during the period of their study at UTS. Services for students include professional counselling and welfare advice, housing, medical and health services, special needs/disabilities services and career programs. You should be aware of students who may be having problems with their studies or other difficulties and refer them to the service for advice, phone 9514 1177.    

Each Faculty has one or more Academic Liaison officers (ALOs) who are academics appointed to handle applications for alternative assessments such as; special conditions in tests, exams for students with disabilities, extra time and dictionaries in exams for students of non-English speaking backgrounds who have language difficulties. ALOs are also contacts for students who experience difficulties with their studies because of family commitments (eg primary carers for small children or family members with a disability or ongoing illness. UTS

Facilities on Campus
UTS has buildings at four Sydney locations - Broadway, Markets, St. Leonards and Kuring-gai.  A map showing each location is at http://www.uts.edu.au/about/mapsdirections/maps.html

As a casual academic you are entitled to use University and Union facilities at any of these locations during the period of your contract.

Pigeonholes, phones or rooms for student consultation are organised at Faculty level and each Faculty will have its' own arrangements.

  • The Union - operates facilities for students and staff on all campuses, including cafeterias, bars and sporting facilities. The union also provides legal and other administrative services, administers all UTS sporting bodies and operates a number of campus shops.

  • Library - the main University Library is located at Markets on the corner of Ultimo Road and Quay Streets. Libraries are also located at Kuring-gai and St Leonards. There is also extensive information available about the Library and its services on the internet. To contact your Liaison Librarian see the library site at http://www.lib.uts.edu.au/services/staff

  • Photocopying - facilities are available in each faculty or the library for photocopying and the University also runs a printing service at Broadway campus.

  • Classroom Services/Equipment - Overhead projectors, video or other equipment or services can be booked through Audio Visual Services. A liaison manager operates on each campus. Call extension 5252. 

  • Room Bookings may be made through the central room booking service by e-mailing room.bookings@uts.edu.au or by fax on 9514 8661.  For further information phone 9514 8660.

  • Telephone - The University switchboard can be reached on 9514 2000.

  • Email - you should activate your UTS email as soon as possible by folllowing the steps on the UTS webmail acctivation site at http://www.uts.edu.au/email/. You can locate staff email and phone numbers on the UTS Staff Directory.

  • Childcare - UTS Childcare Centres  There are childcare services operating at both the city and Kuring-gai campuses. Vacation care for school age children is available at Kuring-gai.   For information about these services please contact the centres directly as follows:

    • Blackfriars (City)  9514 2960

    • Kids Campus (Kuring-gai) 9514 5105

    • McKee street (City) 8289 8400

  • Parking - There is limited parking at City campuses. Privately run parking stations operate in Jones Street and at the markets campuses. You may contact Security Services on ext 1192 who might be able to help you arrange pick up and drop off parking to collect students' assignments, resources etc.   UTS Parking Policy

    Help After Hours
